VR used to treat anxiety in adults with disabilities

Post by Nahid94 »

The first study of its kind has found that adults with neurodevelopmental disorders can experience improvements in symptoms of anxiety and depression after using specially designed virtual reality (VR) sensory rooms. Sensory rooms have and been used for decades to help man with behavior, stress regulation in people with neurodevelopmental disorders. With visual, auditory and tactile devices, these rooms have yielded promising improvements to a variety of users despite the lack of a unified approach.

This potentially restricts access for a range of users, especially those with disabilities who access to required resources. Thus, a potential solution to this obstacle to accessibility is virtual sensory rooms that can be accessed using VR technology.

As part of this new research, a VR sensory space called Everness was tested on 31 adults with various levels of developmental disabilities. Quantitative results showed improvements in anxiety and depression in the pre- and post-period, with changes in sensory processing but no significant changes in adaptive behavior or well-being, the researchers said. The qualitative results showed that participants saw a positivex effect on as well as increased social participation. These findings are, of course, preliminary and limited by the small sample size. The study also concerned only one relatively short experience with the VR system and did not include a control group.
